A unique way of assessing our waterways

This is an excellent publication from Craig Pauling - Ngai Tahu, called The State of Takiwa - Nga Wai Pounamu.

What fantastic information. Only 100 sites tested and 17 sites in individual catchments were analysed. You can find a good article in Te Karaka here or within the TRONT website here.

"State of the Takiwā describes a culturally-based environmental monitoring and reporting system being developed by Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu as part of the overall Ki Uta Ki Tai - Mountains to the Sea Natural Resource Management framework outlined in the tribal vision, Ngāi Tahu 2025."

A specific example, "Cultural Health Assessment of the AvonHeathcoteEstuary and its Catchment
by Craig Pauling, Te Marino Lenihan, Makarini Rupene,Nukuroa Tirikatene-Nash & Rewi Couch from July 2007"

showing the quality of the analysis is here.

A good example of Ngai Tahu planning, developing and implementing a program from our unique perspective. Tau ke Craig and David and the team!

It is always good to go back through older issues of Te Karaka - amazing what you can find - can't wait for it all to be online.
