spelling mistake not okay

Whanganui

Government announces that both spellings of Whanganui are okay. From Stuff
"Mr Williamson said the official geographic name for the city would be the alternatives Whanganui or Wanganui. He had decided to assign alternative names so people had the option of choosing whichever name they preferred."
"During extensive consultation it became clear to me that local iwi were seeking an acknowledgement of something that is very important to them. They wanted recognition and respect for their history and their language.
"It was equally clear that the majority of the city's residents did not want change forced on them."
The decision to use both spellings is not a solution, it is an insult to local maori.

It is a spelling mistake that should be corrected.
It is the maori language.

Correcting the spelling mistake could be an occasion for celebration. The righting of a wrong to bring the community together, hearing the stories and understanding the connections. When are we going to find a person of mana who stands up and leads the way in this type of reconcilliation? We need them yesterday!

award for bully-girls not fair cries laws

Its a joke he cried - I am uhappy

No it is true and we are happy

Well done on your award.

"The pupils, aged 11 to 13, at Otaki School's kura kaupapa unit, were upset with an angry reply from Mr Laws, whom they wrote to in August urging him to insert the letter "h" in Wanganui.

Mr de Bres presented the girls with certificates yesterday to honour their stance.

"Your message to stand up for yourself is clear. You acted with real dignity and calm and quietly stood up for what you thought when dealing with such rubbish from Wanganui's mayor.

"There has been a huge response from around the country for what you did. I hope the minister in charge of this issue will decide to correct the spelling," Mr de Bres said.

He believed the way they had dealt with criticism was an example for everyone in New Zealand.

Ngarui Wihongi-Manukau, Rautini Thompson, Maria Logan-Richards, Amokura Rangiheueu, Teina Davis and Te Rangiamohia Nikora-Davis were disappointed Mr Laws had failed to respond to issues they had raised about the spelling of the town and asked him to apologise."
"Although shy about receiving the honour, the girls said they were pleased they had stood up for themselves and would do so again."
Awesome. This is our future and it is great.

Whanganui gets spelt right

Put it in!

"The New Zealand Geographic Board has recommended the spelling of Wanganui be changed to include the controversial 'h'."

"In the end we could not overlook the fact that Wanganui is not correctly spelt and it is a Maori name that is of significant cultural importance," Dr Grant said.

"Historical evidence has shown that early settlers clearly intended the name of the city to be derived from the Maori name for the river, and consistent modern usage of the language showed the spelling should be Whanganui, not Wanganui."

Good result, now get ready for the bleating of that nobody laws.

Whanganui back

The NZ Geographic Boards decision to add the 'h' into the city and district names is a good decision. The mistake was made (and easy to see how it could happen when you are trying to write down an oral language that uses sounds you are not used to).

Michael Laws should just shut up now. He is becoming smaller and less relevant every day.
