I have quite wide musical taste and I enjoy pretty well most music as anyone checking out my music video posts could attest to. This song is really addictive and I find the emotion, lyrics and apparent simplicity of the music really gets under my skin. The first video is a cover of the song and the second is the original. It deserves to be high in the charts (whatever they are nowdays).
Ngāi Tahu - environment - people - kaitiakitanga - space - indigenous rights - politics - Māori - earth - and anything else that catches my eye

song in my head
I woke this morning with this song in my head - don't know why. After checking out some videos and discarding the Hole version, which I quite like, I decided to put up this one by Julie Driscoll. The video is beyond cool and there are many super funny aspects - like the massive solo and very quiet moments. Julie can sing, although i am concerned about her coat and, well, the dancing - it is difficult to dance in front of the camera like that I am sure so I'll not be too harsh. Great video and great song.

comfortably numbers
I watched the 'leaders' debate last night with four friends aged 16, 25, 36 and 41. Unsurprisingly there was some humour but we all came away saying - "what about the real issues" What about the environment, what about clean water and air, what about people. Key and Goff are deep within the dominant paradigm of 'economic growth', economic this and that and they concentrate around this area because it is safe for them, it is numbers - they don't want to talk about real issues - hell that might make the debate messy. So goff got the hits in and key got the hits in and the adversial system was the winner on the day. You a liar! No, you a liar! - guess what - they are both liars and one of them will be the figurehead for this country, the so-called leader and that made us all wish for a better world.
If we don't stand up and fight for a better world, for people, then we are doomed to more of their useless lines and dismal future.
Time to go in a different direction.

family-whanau-community
This is a great initiative - this time of year can be difficult for many people. Tensions rise as expectations are unable to be met, often women and children suffer increased abuse and violence. Money is short and there are so many endless messages telling us to buy and spend. When you add in the beaches and the fear deceitfully generated around who can go and have a swim - it is no wonder that many struggle. The answer is within this song and the intent behind it.
Family-whanau-community is the answer. We are constantly forced to see and think of ourselves as seperate from others - it is structural and difficult to resist. But it can be resisted - by coming together in love and connection. Any excuse to generate community and togetherness is welcome and it is up to all of us to take the first steps. Ring your relative - the one you had a falling out with. Say gidday to your neighbour - the one you have seen many times. Working together will save us all.

A group of beneficiaries released a Christmas carol with a very distinct kiwi feel and a whole lot of heart. The troupe of unemployed musicians met less than a month ago at a seminar put together by the The Depot and wrote "A Kiwi Christmas" in an hour and recorded it in record time.
Instead of seeing this as a quick money making scheme, the musos have agreed that all proceeds from the sale of the song will go to people even more strapped for income this Christmas season and will donate those takings to the Auckland City Mission.

Song to start
relevant today and so haunting
Buffy Sainte-Marie - Little wheel spin and spin, big wheel turn around and around
Lyric
Little Wheel Spin and Spin Big wheel turn around & around (4x)
Merry Christmas Jingle Bells
Christ is born and the devil's in hell
hearts they shrink Pockets swell
Everybody know and nobody tell
Little Wheel Spin and Spin Big wheel turn around & around (4x)
Oh the sins of Caesar's men
cry the pious citizens
who petty thieve the 5 & 10s
and the big wheels turn around and around
Little Wheel Spin and Spin Big wheel turn around & around (4x)
Blame the angels, blame the fates,
Blame the Jews or your sister Kate
Teach your children how to hate
and the big wheels turn around and around
Little Wheel Spin and Spin Big wheel turn around & around (4x)
Turn your back on weeds you've hoed
silly sinful seeds you've sowed
Add your straw to the camel's load
Pray like hell when your world explode
Little Wheel Spin and Spin Big wheel turn around & around (4x)
Swing your girl fiddler say
Later on the piper pay
Do see do, swing and sway
Dead will dance on judgement day
Little Wheel Spin and Spin Big wheel turn around & around (4x)

Littletunes Studio - music for the people by the people
I've got a mate who is a gifted musican. He has set up Littletunes which is a great concept. Take a group of young people for a couple of days, get them playing instruments, writing lyrics and singing. record and cut it together to make a song, video it and give the band and parents a copy. It really is amazing to see the results, music is such a universal language. An offshoot of Littletunes is the work Sam does with people of mixed ability . These videos show the fun and enjoyment of the process, in this case a weekend workshop. Many people are doing much in our society to make it better and increase the opportunities, especially in releasing creativity. Good on you mate.
Littletunes - music for the people by the people
Those songs will ring in your head, they are catchy and atmospheric and the sentiments of "got to be lazy" and "are you ready for a good time" say it all. Send me or Sam an email if you'd like to consider the talents of Littletunes to help your group, Sam works with children, youth, mixed ability people and teams within communities and organisations to release creativity, improve self esteem, and connect and strenghten teams.

talkin' bout a revolution
Don't you know
They're talkin' bout a revolution
It sounds like a whisper
Don't you know
They're talkin' about a revolution
It sounds like a whisper
While they're standing in the welfare lines
Crying at the doorsteps of those armies of salvation
Wasting time in the unemployment lines
Sitting around waiting for a promotion
Poor people gonna rise up
And get their share
Poor people gonna rise up
And take what's theirs
Don't you know
You better run, run, run...
Oh I said you better
Run, run, run...
Finally the tables are starting to turn
Talkin' bout a revolution

Maria Callas "Vissi d'arte" Paris 1958
I enjoy a bit of opera and I've been to a few. I love sopranos, i'm not really a fan of the tenors.
Maria Callas is my favorite for too many reasons but mostly because I just feel the emotion in her voice.
beautiful - and the subtitles helped I think
